Entry two – Podcast episode

Hello world!

This is dele Alli, a english professional soccer player, most famoulsy known for his time at tottenham hotspurs. during this time he won several awards including the premiere league young player an award that he won back to back. london football awards young player of the year also back to back. BBC GOAl of the season, and lastly he made the premiere league team of the year… once again Back to back. All of which occured during his 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons and by that time he was only 21 years old easily putting himself in the “next big thing” conversations.

dele burst onto the scene around the same time of my own soccer playing career. as a life long manchester United fan myself i caN openly admit that my distaste for tottenham is deep, but as player if you liked soccer it was difficult to not have an appreciation for dele. but as years went on i found myself asking the same question you probably have after reading that intro.

“WEll, where is he now?”

A quick google search will tell you that in 2026, although he is not offically retired dele is now without a club. i stumbled across a relatively recent interview of his awhile back, but figured that given this assignment now would be a good time to sit down and go through it. to my surprise, less than a minute into preview we learn that despite all of that success, at just 24 yeards old dele had been ready to call it quits.

This interveiw is brought to you by “THe overlap”, a youtube channel named after the soccer term “overlapping” which describes the motion of player (usually a fullback) running from behind his teammate up field to recieve the ball, and the often tracking all the way back an action performed by the most committed and conditioned soccer players. Which is fitting given the host is none other than gary Neville, former fullback for manchester united, england and club legend.

The show features a rotating cast of soccer legends as co-hosts, offering a variety of content such as fan debates, and roundtable conversations. This particular interview was the #28 exclusive featuring dele Allie, titled “Now is the time to talk”.

For a little extra context, Gary had coached a young dele as an assistant coach for the englad national team. Allowing this converstation to feel much mor like a sitdown rather than a formal interview.

That, being said, the word Best, may not be appropriate to descirbe this episode, but it is easily one of the most important interviews I have watched in my life. Through this episode we learn the true of story of dele alli, told by dele himself completely distoring the false narratives generated by english media about his career.

at the time of this interview we learn that he had been away at rehab to sort out his issues such as addiction, mental health and trauma. He had finished his program about 3 weeks prior to this interview, leading to alot of fresh insight into his growth and journey thus far. HIs “downfall’, was never a matter of ability. There was an abundance of childhood trauma that had lingering affects slowly bleeding into his career. Which had not been resolved due to his fast transition into adulthood, after making his professional debut at just sixteen years old. Simultaneously, playing circumstances on the field changed due to injuries, and coaching swaps leading to loss of playing time, as well as his confidence.

“It’s always been me against myself in everything, I Was winning the fight smiling showing I was happy, but inside i was losing the battle”

This conversation is extremely raw and genuine. Dele’s new found ability of being vunerable exemplifies bravery and growth and it’s the reason as to why i find this episode so important. although he may appear to be cool and non chalant, throughout the interview he mentions many times that he is scared but understands there are other people who are scared just like him. Who need someone like himself with a platform to let them know that speaking up and seeking help is not a weakness.

the segment of the interview that affected me the most was during his childhood recap. In his own words, these handful of events give you a gist of what his life was like growing up. Below I linked the interview intentionally having it play from the start of the childhood segment. I would recommend watching at least 3 minutes of the interview from this point as it offers some accurate and heavy insight into the topic matter of this conversation.

TRIGGER WARNING; SEXUal abuse, addiction and Mental health

to me, this is what sports media should be, telling the full story. Had this been known early on there wouldn’t be articles questioning his edge. Even when it comes to choosing a favorite athelte I have always been more interested in the story over a performance. Especially when looking at a comeback story or a debreif like this. I find that there is always so much to takeaway from these conversations. All in all, the format of this interview, having coach talk to his former student about life not just soccer. There needs to be more content like this in sports media.

Which leads me back to the 17th take…

sports is not by any means my absolute number one favorite thing in the world. What love the most, is seeing the indomitable human spirit. people who bet on themselves and chase their dreams no matter the cirumstance. it just so happens you can find a lot of stories like that in the world of sports. Which is why exactly how i ended up in a sports group, covering the student athlete life here at ccp.

Through this podcast, as scriptwrtier i want to capture the reality of the situation and the decisions that are made from that point. I am a strong believer that there is beauty in the struggle, so i’m always curious about the day to day process. Which is definitely creative vibe my group is going for.

my time with ccptv studio has scratched my brain in very positive ways. I feel challenged just as much as I feel supported. Plus honestly the way that I am wired the more difficult task, the more satisfying the reward. originally i saw myself as a host or co-host as I am very comfortable on screen, which seemed to be a common theme among my group mates, so i made to decision to take one for the team and took the role of the scriptwrtier. Since that point I feel that i have learned so much with a lot more to learn. So i am excited for whats to come on, and grateful for what feels like a real work environment.
